Name and Date of Project

Cyrano/Good News Project Exhibition

August 15 to December 1

Why It Matters (In communication ecology speech)

Non profit organizations tend to be invisible to New York's power actors. The mission for Cyrano is to build their brand by creating a focus for the invaluable behavior that many of the 25,000+ registered non profits exhibit to improve life in NY  for everyone.

Methods

On the one hand, we have creatives who want to tell the Good News that people can make a real difference. With no bullshit and no spin.

On the other hand, we have numerous organizations that are making a real difference who need visibility, support and respect.

JA is working as Special Projects Manager for Cyrano to create the exhibition with the minimum distraction from other organizational goals.

Next Steps

Garth Walker, a world class designer from South Africa, will be critiquing work that is being produced by 2 classes taught at Parsons by Gigi Polo of myellowboots.com. It is expected that this will form the heart of the upcoming exhbition.

Why It Matters (In communication ecology speech)

The activity spaces of inner city high school students tends to be limited. Exposure to the richer activity spaces of business, non profits and government is a low cost, sustainable method of improving the students' capacity and committment to life long learning.

Methods

On the one hand, we have talented motivated high school students who are eager to engage the "real world".

On the other hand, we have numerous organizations that offer internships in the interests of helping high school students, finding and training an incoming labor force and incented to help the community by improving the education of NYC students.

JA is consulting with a school based team to make the connections.

Next Steps

We are using Pbwiki and Survey Monkey to gather info from the students. to see where we are http://chelseasandbox.pbwiki.com

Name and Date of Project

Wiki2Web  May-June 2007 and ongoing

Results

A web 2.0 application that combines the ease of content management of Pbwiki with the communicative form of a website.

Why it Matters

For a website to change the communication ecology of an organization, the editorial team must be able to edit in "real time". Information that is not timely is not useful information. This tool eliminates the need for specialist skills or personel to update the website. By combining the accessibility and short learning curve of a wiki with password protected content controls, as well as the format of a website, community team leaders can easily manage websites that can be updated in minutes.

Methods

JA collaborated with the PBwiki team to add this functionality. No face time meetings. From the origination of the idea to a working model total time elapsed was 30 days. JA defined the functionality needed, PBwiki designed and implemented it.

Next Steps

The functionality is working. The website that you are presently viewing is a Wiki2Web.  It is the latest addition to the JATechToolkit.

Name and Date of Project

The Good News Project, August, 2006 and ongoing

Results

Successful exhibition in Belgrade, Serbia. With contributions from artists in 12 countries. 30 minutes of national TV coverage at an out of pocket cost of $100. +(plus in kind collaboration of our partners in Serbia) and a $10,000 grant to support the project staff from Yousendit.com.

Why it Matters

One mission of the Good News Project is to change the public discourse to a narrative that tells the stories of people helping people help themselves better. The primary audience are designers from all over the world to tell the Good News Stories in their local communities.

Methods

The idea grew from conversations with Nada Ray. Total time from idea to finished exhibition was 6 weeks. Designers volunteered their work. Designers were contacted through the personal networks of Nada Ray and Michael Josefowicz. PDF files were collected via YouSendIt. Printer on Igen3 digital equipment. Nada worked with her team on the ground in Belgrade to mount the exhibition and publicize the event at Belef.

Next Step

The Good News Project, having successfully mounted a second exhibition in Mexico City is now working with Cyrano.org planning Inspirational New Yorkers, to open in December at the One Club in New York City. An additional exhibition and workshop is scheduled for Mexico , August 23, 2007. To see the project wiki in process (7/30/07), click here.

Frederick Douglas Posters, Fall, 2006

Results

Publication of 3 sets of 18 posters created from Art created by the students.

Why it Matters

An evangelist teacher, Sheila Tilly, just finished a unit in her class based on Frederick Douglass. Students were asked to produce charcoal drawings of Frederick Douglass. This was preceeded by readings and discussion of Frederick Douglass life and times. JA came in contact with Ms Tilly at a conference. It was clear that we were both interested in the same problem.

Informal conversation resulted in the project. This engagement was step one of JA's involvement at the High School.

Methods

Ms Tilly supplied the finished art to JA. JA worked with a volunteer design student, Jillian Harris, who used Adobe Illustrator to produce the posters. She applied the best principles of graphic design to produce PDF files that were "real posters". The PDF's were sent to Astoria Graphics, an iGen3 provider, who printed the 14 by 20 posters. One poster was given to each student, another copy was given to the principal, and the other posters were posted in the hallway of the school as a "Real Exhibition" of work created by the students.

Next Step

Based on demonstrated success, Ms Tilly continues to work with JA to integrate the study and power of art throughout the curriculum of the High School.

Faces Book, April, 2006

Results

Publication of 30 copies of an art book for a 10th grade class at a CTE High School.

Why it Matters

An evangelist teacher, Sheila Tilly published an Art Book that combined art and writing. The effect on the class dynamics was markedly improved. The students self perception seemed to be improved. It also demonstrated the value of the work Ms Tilly was creating in her class. In addition, it provided some evidence to support the idea that even very low performing students will readily work, when the project is well defined and build on the interest of the students to motivate them to learn new skills.

Methods

Ms Tily worked with students to generate art. As a photographer she took photos of each of the students. As she was teaching a photoshop class, the students worked to transform their own faces, in the style of different artists. The artist included Paul Klee, Kandinsky, Keith Harring and others.

Ms Tilly worked directly with students to teach the photoshop skills. When the files were ready, JA worked with a Parsons volunteer design student, Alison Chan, a Junior in the CD Department. Alison created the book. The file was sent to a local digital printer. They produced 30 copies of the book that was delivered to the class, and distributed to the principal to demonstrate the effectiveness of their program to administration at the Department of Education.

Next Step

Based on demonstrated success, Ms Tilly continues to work with JA to integrate the study and power of art throughout the curriculum of the High School.

Student Memoirs, Spring 2006

Results

30 copies of a two volume Memoir was published and delivered to the class room. The memoirs were the result of a concentrated effort by Ms. Moody with her students taking them through the writing process. The book was the physical evidence of their work.

Why It Matters

Ms. Moody has been using publishing in the classroom for years to encourage writing by her students. This was the first time she was able to publish a "real book" to document her efforts. It was an effective way to reward the students for their hard work. The book was read by the students, and distributed to parents, administration. The principal used the book to demonstrate the effectiveness of the program to the Department of Education administration.

The Method

Ms. Moody supplied 600 pages of handwritten copy produced by her students. JA working with Parsons, faxed the pages to Affintiy Express, who keyboarded the documents and emailed word documents back. A student volunteer, Jillian Harris, at Parsons the New School for Design, translated the word documents to a well designed 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 PDF documents. She used Adobe In Design.

Next Step

Ms. Moody was able to see the power of publishing real books in the classroom. She has become a valuable player in the school. Ready and eager for the next steps.

Student Memoirs, Fall 2007

Results

Student memoirs were published for the next group of Ms Moody's class.

The improvement was that the books were 4 by 6. This size was chosen because it is easier to carry and read. In addition we added the feature of personalizing each book, by highlighting each students name on the cover.

This enabled a Publishing Party, where each student's name was called, came up to the podium, and collected his or her personal book.

Why it Matters

Moving with the same player to repeat a process is creating the necessary trust to enable a self-sustaining continuing process. This has resulted in two new additions to the local team, which is presently involved in an improved process.

The Method

Ms Mooddy and Ms Averback suppplied aproximately 600 pages of handwritten copy. This time we used a local MFP to scan each students document into a PDF. The process was quick and easy. The PDF's were sent to Affinity Express. Affinity Express keyboarded the handwritten copy into a password protected Wiki, hosted by PB wiki. This eliminated a lot of time and confusion from the book creation process. The additional advantage, is that the wiki enabled much easier editing by Ms Moody. She was able to log on to the wiki, change, reorganize and edit the copy to get it appropriate for publishing.

A student volunteer designer from Parsons, Thomas Jockin, watched the wiki as it was being populated. Once the email was received that the copy was complete, he cut and pasted the entries into In Design. In addition, Thomas created the personalized covers, manually with In Design.

Next Step

The very successful Publishing Party led to meeting Jane Apellaniz, the School Counselor at the CTE High School. She was impressed with the results of the Pub Party, the first ever for this student population. She reached out to JA to explore how we might help her for more effectively do her job.

This resulted in a informal meeting at the High School which included a previously unknown, to JA, Google certifed teacher. The result of the contacts and continuing discussion, continues to nourish a locally based team that has decided to intervene with the next project.

Name and Date of Project

The Real Team May 2007

The results

Of 10 at risk of not graduating students, 8 are continuing to participate. At least three have demonstrated a real talent for story telling, and at least one will have their work commercially published. The process is still ongoing. More results will be posted as they become clear.

In the addition, the teacher collaborators, have incorporated wiki and Pub Center project management into their activities.

Why it Matters

Many at risk students do not engage in the education process for various complex reasons. If they do not engage in time, they will not graduate on time. If this method works, it points to a model that might be used to intervene earlier in the semester. The immediate result will be to engage at risk students and help them graduate on time.

The method

The team is Ms Moody, and Ms Appelaniz. The purpose is to intervene with a number of students who are in danger of not graduating becuase they have failed English. The classroom teachers have agreed to give the students a passing grade, if and only if, they engage in a Special Project that demonstrates learning and serious effort. If the students can write and publish a book, in which the contributions are of appropriate quality, and the students have demonstrated serious effort, they will pass English, and graduate on time.

JA worked with the teachers to set up a wiki, and is managing the process thorough Pub Center communication tools. This eliminates the translation of hard copy into digital form, by having the students enter directly onto the web. To move from a wiki to document creation, a design student volunteer will cut and paste into In Design, outputting a PDF file, which will be sent to a digital printer to produce the appropriate nunber of books.

Next Steps

The intervention has demonstrated enough potential value, that Ms Moody and Ms Apellaniz are exploring the possibility of rolling out to a number of classes in September. Since the team is on the ground, the hardest work was been completed. The basic processes are now in place. If it successfully engages, difficult to engage high school students, it will make the job of education much more efficient.

College Level Design School

Name and Date of Project

PM, a student newspaper at Parsons the New School for Design. Spring 2007

The results

A student newspaper was printed and distributed. A viable team was created to continue the newspaper in September. The second edition is being planned as of July, 2007

Why it Matters

Students from this design school have wanted to start a student newspaper many times over the last 6 years. But given time constraints and methods of work, it has failed many times. By a very low investment in money, but a significant investment in time and focus - social capital- it has now succeeded. At least for the first issue.

The Method

Find evagelist students, get a faculty mentor, work with them to create a leadership team that can carry forward the effort. Given the time demands on all the players, face time meetings between faculty, student evangelists and communication process manager were limited to one hour per week as the team culture was being developed.

At about half way, the communication process manager was replaced by a student who had been learning CPM techniques for about a year. At that point, the CPM intern took over the face time obligations, the CPM moved to on line mentoring. Based on student, faculty and intern CPM, the engagement transferred knowledge and learning among all happened.
